History of the Roman Shade

Roman shades, or Roman blinds as they are also called, have been around a lot longer than one may have expected. Due to the name itself, many will find it no wonder that they have a connection in one way or another to the Romans. While some historians differ on the origin most agree Roman shades played a big part during the days of the Roman Coliseum. Since the spectators had to be out in the outdoor arena for most of the day during the events, a shade contraption was created in order to keep the sun away. These shades would be put out when the sun was high and drawn back in a folded manner, such as with Roman blinds today, when they were not in use. The other often told origin is during the construction of the Roman Coliseum, there was so much dust in the air that locals would cover their windows with damp cloths to keep the debris out. The same folding technique which was used back then was instituted in later years to form the Roman shade of today.
